Yet very few ask: ‘How should I store them once I’ve bought them?’

Carbon fibre panels are not a ‘buy-and-forget’ product. As a carbon fibre manufacturer, we have seen far too many cases where carbon fibre panels have been rendered unusable due to improper storage—warping, delamination, surface resin cracking, or even sudden brittle fracture. Panels costing tens of thousands or even over a hundred thousand may be ruined before they are even fitted, simply because they were stored in the wrong environment.

In this article, we will set out clearly the major no-nos and best practices for storing carbon fibre panels.

What do carbon fibre panels fear most?

Carbon fibre itself is stable in terms of performance, but carbon fibre panels are composites made from carbon fibre and a resin matrix. It is usually the resin that causes problems.

1. Sensitive to damp

Once the resin has absorbed moisture, the interfacial bonding strength decreases, making delamination more likely. Prolonged exposure to high-humidity conditions may cause the carbon fibre sheet’s surface to whiten or develop bubbles.

2. Sensitive to direct sunlight and high temperatures

Ultraviolet light causes the resin to age and become brittle, whilst high temperatures can cause irreversible warping and deformation of the carbon fibre panels. In particular, if left in a car or under a metal canopy in summer, where temperatures can easily exceed 60°C, the carbon fibre panels will essentially be ruined.

3. Sensitivity to heavy loads and improper stacking

If a carbon fibre panel is laid flat on an uneven surface, or if heavy objects are placed on top of it, prestress will build up over time, causing warping. Storing it vertically against a wall can also cause it to gradually bend.

4. Vulnerability to impact

Once the edges and corners of a carbon fibre panel are damaged—even if only by a small chip—this can act as the starting point for a crack when subjected to stress, significantly reducing its strength.

Correct Storage Methods

1. Environmental Requirements

- Temperature: 15°C to 25°C is ideal; avoid sudden fluctuations

- Humidity: Relative humidity of 40% to 60%; the use of a dehumidifier is recommended

- Protection from light: Keep away from windows and UV lamps; cover with a light-blocking cloth

2. Storage instructions

- Must be stored flat, with a flat base or foam padding underneath

- Do not stand upright, lean against anything or hang up

- When stacking multiple pieces, separate them with soft foam padding; the total height should not be too high

3. Packaging and Protection

- For items still in their original, unopened vacuum packaging, ensure the vacuum seal remains intact as far as possible

- For items that have been opened, re-wrap them in polyethylene film or an aluminium foil bag and include a desiccant

- Apply corner protectors to the edges and corners to prevent knocks and bumps

4. Regular inspections

- Check the surface once a month for any signs of whitening, blistering or warping

- If any abnormalities are found, isolate the affected area immediately and do not continue to use the product

Carbon plates are precision materials, not iron plates

Carbon fibre panels are lightweight, strong and rigid, but they are also ‘delicate’. If you treat them like ordinary panels and store them carelessly, they will end up being scrapped.
